Our steel collar ties were installed and subsequently the temporary collar ties, made of wood from the Sunflower Ammunition Plant, were removed. The collar ties are structural members, which keep the roof rafters from pushing out the wall on which they are resting. Each tie is constructed of steel brackets, made from steel flat bar and two pieces of seven foot threaded steel rod. The rod is stretched from rafter to rafter, 9 feet above the second floor. It is held in the bracket by pins and connected by a turnbuckle, both provided by Cleveland City Forge.
