The start of week two came with the fantastic news that Studio 804_08 would begin demolition of our magazine building at Sunflower Ammunition Plant. After over 5 months of negotiations, the news was simply too good to be true. By midweek, we were well underway, with the majority of the roof shingles and plywood removed and preserved. A special thanks to our board members, especially attorneys Jim Orr and Bill Quatman, for their assistance in this process. On Friday, the whole studio made it out to Sunflower to start the deconstruction of the roof trusses and the unenviable task of de-nailing over seven tons of material. We recovered over 10,000 board foot of lumber from our building, which is only one of over one thousand buildings that remain at the site. This was also the first full day of filming of Studio 804 by the crew of “Eco-Town,” Discovery Communications launch program for their new channel, Planet Green. Over the course of the rest of the semester, the work of Studio 804 and our delivery of the finished product will be documented by their crew, with the intent being that Studio 804 plays a significant role in telling the story of the rebuilding of Greensburg. It will no doubt bring the work of Studio 804 and the efforts being undertaken in Greensburg to an even wider audience. In addition to the demolition of Sunflower, it has been a pivotal week in the design of our building. Throughout the past few meetings there have been countless iterations of the interior layout of the building. Along with this exercise has been the detailed study of the exterior skin, doors and windows, as well as all of the finishes which will need to be considered and decided upon.
