PREFAB PROGRESS :
week 12 [march 17 - march 23]

Week twelve was moving week.  We packed, secured, and waterproofed the seven units for their 270 mile journey.  After closing up shop at our Lawrence warehouse, we departed at 9:00am Monday morning, and arrived in Greensburg around 6:00pm.  Even though the day started with rainy weather, the trip was a huge success.  As we drove into town, many people were awaiting our arrival.  Seeing the transportation run smoothly and safely was an exciting and relieving occasion.  On Tuesday, we had beautiful weather—we couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to set the units on the foundation.  Belger Cartage Service brought a crane to lift the units, one by one, off of their trucks and place them on site.  Starting with the west side, mod number 7 was placed by a process called ‘pick and drop.’  Next, mod 6 was picked up and dropped on its specified location, followed by the five remaining mods.  Once placed, they still needed a little push from us to get them in their precise positions.  On the count of three, we used our brute strength to push each unit a few additional inches.

The rest of the week consisted of emptying the units of our tools and materials, as well as the deconstruction of temporary wall bracing.  We also finished securing the wall and roof waterproof membranes, and continued our site work, including backfilling, re-grading, and compacting.  We also settled into our new home for 2 months at Pratt Community College.  The college is graciously allowing us to take up residence in their dorms while we complete our on-site work in Greensburg.
