The demolition and reclamation of our magazine building proved to be the easy part in the process. Once all of the material was moved to our warehouse, the arduous process of processing the wood began. After scouring over 15 tons of wood for every stray nail, each piece was first run through a planer to quickly wipe away the remnants of 30 years of wear and tear. Each piece was then ripped to specific widths by running them through the table saw. The next step in the process was to thoroughly sand each piece of lumber in preparation for the final step in the sequence, which was the application of an exterior coating to protect the wood and keep its beauty for the years to come.
Nearly every piece of lumber from our magazine building is being utilized in some fashion. While the predominant use will be the re-application of the exterior siding of the magazine building for our sustainable prototype, 2x4’s and 2 x 6’s from the trusses is being used as furouts, roof sheathing is being used as structural insets and nailers, and nearly everything else has in some way or another been used to create mock-ups for the final product.
